The Problem
Maki People faced several challenges in delivering a seamless and engaging experience for candidates.
The introduction pages for assessments were static and uninspiring, failing to excite candidates or help them connect with the company or role. Instructions for tests were generic and lacked contextual relevance, leaving candidates confused and unprepared, especially during video assessments, which felt intimidating and error-prone. These gaps in the user experience created unnecessary friction in the candidate journey and negatively impacted their perception of the recruitment process.
Mission Goals
The project aimed to transform the candidate experience by addressing critical pain points in the assessment flow. This included contextualizing the testing process, reducing candidate anxiety—particularly for video assessments—and creating a more dynamic introduction to the company and role. As UX designers, our objective was to deliver high-fidelity wireframes that addressed these challenges and formed the foundation for UI implementation.
As part of a two-person UX design team, I worked closely with another designer to reimagine and improve the candidate experience. We collaborated throughout the process, splitting tasks to focus on specific elements such as the company introduction page, test instructions, and the video assessment flow. After initial work on each section, we regrouped to assess progress, refine designs, and ensure that our solutions aligned with Maki People’s vision.
Together, we tackled the major pain points, creating high-fidelity wireframes that addressed candidate needs while remaining actionable for the development team. These wireframes formed the backbone of the subsequent UI design phase, ensuring a cohesive and user-centered implementation.
To create a welcoming and engaging experience, we designed an interactive company introduction page. This page allowed candidates to learn about the organization, its culture, and the role they were applying for, helping them feel more connected before starting the assessment.
The introduction pages for assessments were transformed into dynamic, role-specific experiences designed to engage and inform candidates before they began their tests. These pages served as an entry point, providing candidates with information about the test’s purpose, its importance in the recruitment process, and how it connects to the company’s mission. By incorporating branding elements and role-specific details, this design helped candidates better understand the context of the assessment while reinforcing their connection to the organization.
Once the candidate entered the assessment itself, the test pages were tailored to each type of evaluation—whether video, personality, or classic multiple-choice tests. These pages featured clear instructions for each type of test, including guidelines on duration, format, and what candidates should expect. Performance indicators, such as progress bars and time limits, were integrated to ensure clarity throughout the experience. The contextualized instructions were designed to reduce confusion, offering candidates step-by-step guidance to complete the test with confidence.
The video flow was completely reimagined to address candidate pain points. We designed a structured process that guided users through each step, from setting up their recording environment to submitting the video. Troubleshooting tips and intuitive navigation were included to reduce stress and make the process more approachable.
While the UI design was handled by a separate team, the following screens showcase the final polished interface, which was based on the wireframes created by the UX design team.
The high-fidelity wireframes we delivered were met with enthusiasm and directly addressed the identified candidate pain points. The redesigned flows were developed into functional features, significantly improving the candidate experience. Feedback highlighted the clarity and supportiveness of the video flow in particular, while the dynamic company page helped candidates feel more connected to the process.
Although Maki People has since evolved toward AI-driven recruitment solutions, this project remains a key milestone in improving the candidate journey and aligning the platform with its broader vision.
